PRACTICAL BASKETBALL · PC + CONTROLLER STARTER ROUTE

Start with the six lessons, then build one simple game plan

Open Learn PB before joining a public game, finish the six built-in lessons, set your camera and meter, choose one role, and practice one shot, one pass and one scoring move. This route keeps the first session focused while the linked guides handle the full move lists.

STEP BY STEP

Run the mechanic in sequence

  1. 01

    Complete Learn PB first

    6 lessons

Use the main-menu Learn PB option and finish Post, Defense, Finishing, Dribbling, Moving and Passing, and Shooting. These lessons establish the game's own terminology before you use a longer move list.

  2. 02

Set the camera, controls and shot meter

    Settings

Open Settings and review Gameplay, Camera and Meter. Controller players should decide whether to use the Player camera with D-pad dribbling or a POV-style camera that supports right-stick dribbling.

  3. 03

    Choose one role before building

    Role first

Decide whether the first build should handle the ball, spot up, finish, defend or play inside. A do-it-all build can cover several jobs, but every added strength costs attributes or badges somewhere else.

  4. 04

Read all four View Build tabs

    Build setup

Use Attributes for ratings, Badges for finishing, shooting, playmaking and defense, Vitals for body and role details, and Animations for equipped moves. Check an animation's height and rating requirement before building around it.

  5. 05

Learn one shot, one pass and one dribble

    3 actions

On PC, hold E and release on the green cue, press R for the basic pass, and start with C or Z for a crossover. On Controller, start with the ball-hand-relative crossover and add RT or R2 only after the standing input is consistent.

  6. 06

    Practice one finish

    One finish

Choose a normal dunk, layup or self lob rather than learning every gather at once. Use the linked finishing guides for platform-specific inputs and practice from the same approach angle until the route is repeatable.

  7. 07

    Use the gym before Blacktop

    Practice

Repeat open shots, basic passes and one scoring move in a gym. Move to Blacktop after the inputs are stable, then create or join a lobby through the available play and party menus.

  8. 08

    Keep the first game simple

    First game

Protect stamina, move the ball when a teammate is open, take the shot your build is designed for, and return to defense after the possession. Add longer dribble combinations only when one move no longer creates an answer.

TROUBLESHOOTING

When the attempt fails

Change one part of the setup at a time so you can see what fixes the attempt.

I do not know where to start

Open Learn PB from the main menu and complete the six lessons. Then review Gameplay, Camera and Meter before creating a longer practice routine.

An animation cannot be equipped

Check its height and attribute requirement in the animation store, then compare that requirement with the Vitals and Attributes tabs of the current build.

The shot meter reaches the wrong point

Repeat stationary shots from one location and release on the same visual cue. Avoid changing the jump shot while learning its timing.

The dribble goes toward the wrong hand

Pause and identify the current ball hand. C and Z on PC and D-pad directions on Controller are relative to the side carrying the ball.

The build can do many things but has no clear strength

Choose the first job for each possession, then prioritize the attributes and badges that serve it. Treat a do-it-all setup as one example, not a required template.

Advanced combos drain stamina

Return to one setup move and one decision. Shoot, pass or drive as soon as the first move creates an advantage.

QUICK ANSWERS

Guide FAQ

What should a new Practical Basketball player do first?

Complete the six Learn PB lessons, review the camera and meter settings, choose one build role, and practice one shot, one pass and one scoring move.

Which PC controls should I learn first?

Start with E for shooting, Shift for sprinting, R for a normal pass, and C or Z for the ball-hand-relative crossover.

Should Controller players use the D-pad or right stick to dribble?

The Player camera supports D-pad dribbling and keeps camera control available. A POV-style camera can support right-stick dribbling. Choose one method before learning sequences.

What is a good first build?

A good first build has one clear role and enough secondary tools to stay useful without the ball. Use the Builds hub to compare positions instead of copying a single creator build without checking its trade-offs.

Which badges should a beginner prioritize?

Prioritize badges that support the build's main action: shooting speed and range for shooters, handles and passing for creators, finishing support for slashers, or core contest and screen-navigation tools for defenders.

Where should I practice before playing online?

Use Learn PB and a gym to stabilize inputs, then enter Blacktop when you can repeat a basic possession without checking the control list.
